Auditori Oriol Bohigas de l’Ateneu

The embryo of the Ateneu can be traced back to the mid-19th century. The project of creating an Ateneu in the city of Barcelona began to take shape among liberal professions and the emerging bourgeoisie as early as 1835, as reflected in the statutes of a hypothetical Ateneu published in the Diario de Barcelona, which was never built.

It was not until 1860 that the Ateneu Català was founded, an institution where we can find the direct origins of the Ateneu Barcelonès. Its merger with the Centro Mercantil Barcelonés (itself the result of the union between the Casino Barcelonés and the Círculo Mercantil Barcelonés) was formalized in 1872.
