Shego at WIMEN Festival: A musical catharsis you won't want to miss

04.09.2025

In just a few years, the band Shego went from being a fun time between friends to establishing itself as a must-see band of the new Spanish indie-rock scene. Their live shows are cathartic experiences where audiences—from young to older audiences—find a space to scream, laugh, cry, and dance.

If you haven't seen them live yet, Shego's upcoming concert in Barcelona as part of the WIMEN Festival is the perfect opportunity to experience all their live energy.

Who is Shego?.

The group, currently made up of Raquel Cerro (vocals and guitar), Maite Gallardo (vocals and guitar), and Charlotte Augusteijn (bass), was born in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic as a way to channel the uncertainty and anger of lockdown. This emotion transformed into a sound world with its own identity, with its sharp guitars, unfiltered lyrics, and a stage presence that connects with audiences of different generations.

Their project, Suerte, Chica (2023), their debut album, is an emotional projection of heartbreak and irony that confirmed Shego's place in the Spanish alternative rock scene. Positive reviews and success on platforms led them to play at festivals such as Bilbao BBK Live and Sonorama. They also collaborated with artists such as Zahara and Natalia Lacunza.

In 2025, they returned with No lo volveré a hacer (I Won't Do It Again), an album that addresses the emotional rollercoaster of breakups: from pain and anxiety to anger, acceptance, and, finally, calm. The songs function as chapters from a personal diary, but without abandoning the punk energy. This is reflected in the album's sound, with its influences from 1990s British alternative rock and a rawer, more direct production. The guitars, bass, and drums take center stage, in a conscious effort to build a repertoire tailored for live performances.

Shego: an alternative to modern musica

What sets Shego apart isn't just their sound, but the way they approach music and their image. In an industry still dominated by men, they shy away from being defined solely as a "girl band." They prefer to talk about the intensity, irony, and energy they convey, and how their lyrics, somewhere between tenderness and rage, connect with a generation that experiences their emotions without concealment.

Their impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, the band Shego received the MIN Award for Best Emerging Artist on Spotify RADAR, and were also honored with the +Músicas Award for Best Rock Recording.

Today, with two albums under their belt and a tour that has taken them to more than twenty cities, Shego represents a fresh blend of brashness and maturity. They remain intense, as they define themselves, but that intensity is what gives them strength, honesty, and a unique connection with their listeners. In his words, it all comes down to accepting that making mistakes is human, and that we'll probably always say "I won't do it again"… only to do it again.

A must-watch live event in Barcelona

A Shego concert awaits you in Barcelona this October. Live, Shego displays an energy reminiscent of both the post-punk rawness of Joy Division and the incendiary irony of Los Punsetes, without losing a melodic pulse close to current alternative pop. Guitars range from distorted roars to the most intimate fragility, powerful bass lines sustain the tension, and lyrics that, between screams and tenderness, pierce everyone who listens.

Seeing them live is like facing an emotional and performative whirlwind: a show where people shout, laugh, dance, and uneasy truths are revealed with fierce humor. Their intensity is contagious, and their onstage complicity turns each song into a collective ritual that captivates both those seeking a pogo and those simply looking to be swept away by a burst of brutal honesty.

If you've never seen Shego live, trust us, you won't regret it.
